Tuesdays With Ale: A Day of Firsts

At night Ale sleeps with us in our bed. Nap time since as long as we can remember has been in his Baby Bjorn bouncy chair. He loves sleeping in it. If he could sleep the night in it, I think he would. Ale is growing- tall. He is as tall as some three year olds. In fact many people think he is three and he is only 21 months old. I digress, – Ale is too long now for his beloved bouncy chair. Ale needs a new nap location. How about his crib in his bedroom? Perfect! We can get him used to sleeping in his bed now at nap time and when he is ready he can sleep there at night.

So Tuesday morning I took Ale to the music class at the YMCA then we headed to the park for extra long swing, sprinkler and jungle gym time. By 12:30pm he was tired. So tired that he walked right over to our stroller and asked to go home.

Once at home I got Ale ready for his nap. He wanted his bouncy chair but I redirected him down the hall to his room. We settled in with a book, blanket, 5oz of milk and the shades down. Ale only comes into his room to play for short periods of time so he thought it was party time. He asked for the large wooden pirate ship, some trains, and another book. I was persistent and he never left his crib. Finally after only 20-30 min he fell asleep in his crib for two hours! Victory!

The next accomplishment is a toddler show of strength. After Ale's nap and lunch we headed back out to another park. This park has a few different slides. What all the kids love to do is hang on the bar above the slide before going down. Ale would watch the other kids in awe. Yesterday, he did it! He was so happy with himself.

Tuesdays With Ale

I know. I know. It’s Thursday but I just came up with the idea that I would like to start a weekly photo installment highlighting my Tuesdays with Ale.

Tuesday is the only day out of the seven days where I am guaranteed the day off. This is an agreement I made with my work when I returned from maternity leave. On Tuesday I have Ale all to myself and we have a lot of fun together.

This week is a good week to start because Fer, Ale’s 16 year old cousin, is spending two weeks with us. Fer adores Ale and Ale thinks Fer is the funniest and most entertaining person on the planet. On Tuesday we hopped on the subway and headed to Coney Island.

Daily Prompt: Flip Flop

Daily Prompt: Flip Flop
Think of a topic or issue about which you’ve switched your opinion. Why the change?

I have never contradicted myself as much as I have since I became a mom. When I was childless I had strong opinions about parenting, the horrible parenting styles of people I knew and their spoiled, annoying children. Now I want to go back in time and reach out to the moms and dads I mocked and tell them that I’m so very sorry. Now I get it. Parenting is hard, and I have to learn it the hard way.

There are a slew of issues that I can say that I changed my opinion on. There is no reason to list them here. A quick scroll through my blog will reveal the things that I have struggled with. What I am trying to do is roll with the punches and just have a good time while trying to keep Ale (and myself) in check. Each day brings new obstacles to overcome, but it also brings lots of love and a ton of kisses, and laughs.

Daily Prompt: Dream Home

Daily Prompt: Dream Home
You win a contest to build your dream home. Draft the plans.

Poor Ale was given a future thinking mom. This means it’s impossible for me to live in the present. I’m always thinking of the next thing, the next step, five years from now. So I want to nix the idea of how to build my dream home because I would build it, live in it for a few years and then I would set my sights for my next dream home.

However, just last week I was thinking of moving out of NYC. We went away to Cape Cod. I love going there. Its quaint, and by the ocean. I looked at real estate magazines saw that it was feasible. We could escape the crazy NYC school system of zoned schools, charter schools, and specialized schools. There would just been one good school to go. Ale could live a carefree, suburban, New England life. We would have a HOUSE! More space! What about jobs- that was the tricky part but we could figure something out. We could make it happen!!

Then we came back home. For once, the reality of the present set in. We have a great apartment, in a good neighborhood- with good schools. We have good jobs, with family and friends close by. I grew up in NYC and I’m just fine. Ale will be fine as well. We can always return to Cape Cod for vacations.

Now that the moving to Cape Cod idea can be put to rest…… I can go back to planing my next project- renovating my bathroom in my current home sweet home!

Weekly Photo Challenge: Nostalgic

20130706-103306.jpg

This is a photo of me and my dad. I was graduating from Kindergarten. I love this photo. It captures my dad perfectly. He was a strong proud man. He is posing for the camera and showing his best profile. There I am the little girl who is just proud of her dad.

My dad passed away in 2009. He was 83 years old. I am heart broken that he was not able to meet Ale. I have few regrets in my life but I truly regret not having Ale sooner so that they could have laughed together. My dad would have thought the world of Ale and would have tried to give him the universe. I have photos and videos that I made of him when I realized that time was running out. At least this way Ale can hear first hand some of the funny jokes and stories of his adventures in life.

Let Me Introduce You To Grandma

20130702-075944.jpg

Last Monday on the way to Ale’s daycare I told him that I was picking him up early. Grandma was coming to visit! To my surprise he said “grandma” over and over for the very first time. There he was in his stroller saying “grandma”. It was like he enjoyed the way the word rolled off his tongue and out of his mouth.

At 4pm sharp Grandma and I entered the daycare to pick up Ale. Ale sees us from the back of the play space and comes running towards us. This time he does not run to me, he runs to Grandma. He then turns to his favorite teacher and points to my mom and shouts “Grandma! Grandma!”.

Later that evening at home when Papa came home Ale introduced Grandma to him. He went up to Papa and pointed to my mom on the sofa and said “Grandma!”.

Needless to say, Ale made Grandma more than happy. She is always afraid that Ale will not remember her as they see each other only once or twice a month. Ale proved to her that she is much loved as “Grandma” made it into his list of important first words.
